Sky Descriptions

These sky descriptions are slightly modified versions of those used by NOAA. “Opaque clouds” are clouds that do not allow anything to be seen through them – the sun, moon, stars and blue sky are hidden. “8/8” means there is no sky free of cloud cover. “0/8” means that the entire sky is free of cloud cover.

Black Overcast    8/8 opaque clouds, extremely dense, usually with wind

Cloudy                  6/8 – 7/8 opaque clouds

Partly Cloudy        3/8 – 5/8 opaque clouds

Mostly Sunny        1/8 – 2/8 opaque clouds

Sunny                   0/8 opaque clouds

Full Sun         0/8 opaque clouds with little or no haze, usually with little or no wind
