Heat Stress Adviser is a program designed to enable the user to estimate Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, the powerful heat stress index employed by the military and by industry, without purchasing expensive instruments.

Heat Stress Adviser is made up of (1) 5 calculators and (2) a large amount of material designed to help the user apply the calculator-generated information.

The weather data source options are (1) a nearby local airport (2) a sling psychrometer or (3) a Mannix SAM990DW digital psychrometer. (Other digital psychrometers will probably perform in a similar fashion, but only the Mannix has been tested up to this time.)

Of the Airport Data-based calculators, the Airport Dew Point to WBGT calculator is very slightly more accurate than the Airport Relative Humidity to WBGT calculator, although both provide good accuracy, considering that remote-site data is being used.

Each calculator requires data entry. To enter data in the iPhone, tap on the empty rectangle to the right of the input variable (such as Temperature °F), or click on it on the Desktop. Proceed in this way until all the input boxes are filled, then click the "Calculate" button. Here is a rundown on the input variables:

1.  Dry Bulb Temperature. This is just the ordinary air temperature that is reported by the weatherman.

2.  Wet Bulb Temperature, Relative Humidity or Dew Point Temperature. Each calculator requires one of these measures of the amount of moisture in the air.

3.  Sky Conditions. Most of the calculators ask for an assessment of sky conditions. The rules for making this assessment are outlined on the References page, “Sky Descriptions" link.

4.  Time of Day. Several of the calculators ask for the time of day. This is Daylight Saving Time, and the user should list the hour nearest the moment that the weather data observations are being made.

5.  "Adjusted" readings. Some of the calculators report an “adjusted” temperature reading. This adjustment procedure changes the value to the temperature that would be expected with an aspirated psychrometer.
